2015-2016 PTSA MEETING SCHEDULE:

May 10, 2016
WALTER JOHNSON SCHOOL OVERCROWDING
UPCOMING FORUMS- Please show your support!
A huge area of concern for families within our Walter Johnson school cluster is the increase in residential development in the area and its future impact on our schools-- this includes Rock Spring, Grosvenor Heights, Toll Brothers WMAL radio tower site, Pike and Rose, and White Flint, in addition to the redevelopment trend of older homes in our area... Take for example Ashburton elementary school which has grown from 650 students in 2007 to over 900 this year representing a 57% increase. The schools are bursting at the seams, with portables being added to handle the volume, and school additions in the works for many of the schools including a possible addition at Walter Johnson to bring its capacity closer to 3200.
For more information and upcoming meetings, please click on the following links to learn more:
- WJ Cluster Overcrowding presentation given at our last NB PTSA meeting by Howie Philips, VP Cluster. Click here.
- Interim Superintendents report on enrollment increases within our cluster and a recommendation for a Walter Johnson Cluster Round Table Discussion Group to take place this Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at Walter Johnson HS. Click here.
And please come and show your support for these upcoming meetings:
October 28 at Walter Johnson High School, 7 to 9pm. Rock Spring Community Meeting. Montgomery County Planning Department invites the community to meet with planners, discuss the challenges and opportunities of the plan area.
October 29 at 45 West Gude Drive, Rockville, 7 to 9pm. MCCPTA’s CIP Forum. Please attend this meeting. Find out what MCPS is suggesting as budget priorities. It is mostly a presentation, but there will be time for a brief Q&A at the end
November 9 at the Carver Educational Services Center, 800 Hungerford Drive, Rockville, starting at 7:00pm. Our cluster will be testifying before the Board of Education and Acting Superintendent Larry Bowers. We need to fill the room. You do not have to testify, you just have to show up! We will have signs for you to hold to show your support for the WJ Cluster, but it is important that the folks in charge know that we in the community want the current renovations in our cluster to stay on track (and not be delayed). This includes letting them know that we want them to act on opening Woodward High School back up ASAP, as well as our need for two more elementary and one middle school in our cluster, etc.

PARENT VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES AND NBMS PTSA EVENTS CALENDER:
Care Cash Cashier Sign-up
Each year the students get opportunities to earn Care Cash through the NBMS Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports Program (PBIS). We will need contributions throughout the year such as gift cards or other small gifts, and would appreciate any support that you could give to the program!
Running the Care Cash cart during all three grades lunch period is a fun and appreciated way to support the school!
There will be a PTSA Table at the Back to School Night, so you can drop off any donations at the table on that night. Or, your child can drop off the gift or gift card in the main office, in an enveloped marked: PBIS., Attn: Mrs. Stacey Kopnitsy.
Stay tuned for information on how to sign up for these cashier timeslots. Thanks so much for your interest and support of this great program at NBMS!
Box Top Collection Drive:
This year North Bethesda Middle School will be participating in the Box Tops for Education program (see note above). Clipping Box Tops is an easy way for you to help our school buy what it needs. Box Tops are worth 10 cents and they quickly add up to cast for NBMS.
Please look for the pink "Box Tops" on products, clips them and hold on to them for now. To see a list of participating products, please go to http://www.boxtops4education.com/participating-products.

Loyalty Card Program
Here is an easy way to give thousands of dollars to our school with only 3 minutes of work! Please enroll in the loyalty card program and earn free money for our school from local retailers such as Giant, Harris Teeter, and Target. Last year we earned $3264.58 from Giant alone!
If you are registered and shop at these stores, a percentage of your purchases will be donated to NBMS! It is very easy to register and takes only a moment of your time. You can register online or by telephone. If you are already a member of Harris Teeter then please RENEW! Former members must renew with Harris Teeter every year!

Unfortunately, the Safeway loyalty card program is no longer available.
If you have questions about the program please feel free to contact Jennifer Robinson at email@example.com.
Media Center Help Needed:
The NBMS Media Center could use your help! Know your alphabet? Always wanted to work with the Dewey Decimal System? The Media Center needs adult volunteers willing to shelve books and work on other library tasks. Two hours a week or every other week would be greatly appreciated. A library is a great place to be! Contact the Media Specialist, Ms. Christine Hafer at Christine_C_Hafer@mcpsmd.org and thanks in advance!
